Kensington & Chelsea Art Weekend Summer 2018 Celebrating Cultural Legacy of Kensington and Chels
Today, April 20th, The Kensington and Chelsea Art Weekend Management Board publicly announced the launch of Kensington & Chelsea Art Weekend in July 2018.
Designer Felix Conran, legendary photographer Terry O’Neill and gallerist and managing director of the Kensington-based arts development Cromwell Place are among the luminaries siting on the Advisory Committee of this exciting new venture. Jennifer Conner, publisher of After Nyne Magazine and Claire Meadows, Editor in Chief (pictured here centre and right with founder of the weekend initiative Vestalia Chilton) are on the Management Board.
In total, 50 events will be held in galleries, public spaces, museums and cultural institutions; Red Bus ‘Hop on/Off’ Gallery tours connecting North and South Kensington, a lecture series and podcasts by After Nyne Magazine, curator talks & debates and temporary public art installations.
The borough of Kensington & Chelsea has an artistic heritage that encompasses some of the best and brightest creative names. From South Kensington’s museums in Exhibition Road to the bustle of King’s Road; from the urban bohemia of Notting Hill to the modern elegance of the Design Museum, a journey through Kensington & Chelsea is a journey through history.
In July 2018 the project will be celebrating the rich heritage of the borough by opening doors to local creative spaces along with leading organisations in the area to facilitate further public engagement in the local culture.
A leading platform for collecting and discovering art, Artsy has joined the project as a partner. Artsy’s mission is to make all the world’s art accessible to anyone with an Internet connection – including in its reach the cultural projects such as the Venice Biennale, The Armory Show and Basel. With an online audience of 45 million visits to date and 2.5 million visits per month, the project stands to reach a global audience of more than 190 plus countries.
Founder/Organizer Vestalia Chilton states: ‘We live in times that if you do not exist on line you might not exist at all, so having Artsy on board is key. The project will be part of London’s calendar not just regionally but Globally and with an appeal to our younger generations.’
Claire Meadows, Editor-in-Chief of After Nyne Magazine noted ‘We’re delighted to be involved in this exciting new initiative. The borough of Kensington & Chelsea has a rich and varied cultural heritage, and we look forward to celebrating that, along with looking at ways to inspire the next generation of creatives.‘
The art weekend is working together with the Exhibition Road Cultural Group established 200 years ago to promote education in particular by enhancing collaboration between the artistic, scientific and cultural institutions in and around Exhibition Road and South Kensington.
Emily Candler, an advisory board member for the art weekend and Director of Exhibition Road Cultural Group commented: “This is one of the world’s most popular cultural destinations and home to an extraordinary cluster of world-leading organisations pioneering innovation and learning in science and the arts. So much more than a great day out, here we generate and share knowledge and inspire the engineers, designers, scientists, musicians and artists of the future and together the area welcomes over 20 million visitors each year. The Art Weekend will help new audiences discover the diversity of creative practice across the borough.”
