Working with Banksy at Dismaland gives artist Nettie Wakefield a head start

Quick draw: Nettie Wakefield is exhibiting reverse portraits created at Banksy’s Dismaland

Artist Nettie Wakefield today told of sketching in the rain at Banksy’s Dismaland and her future sculpture plans ahead of an exhibition of her work.

The pencil-artist from Kentish Town is to show prints of three pieces created while working as a “busker” in Banksy’s so-called bemusement park last year. The 28-year-old was set up like a “Leicester Square-style cartoonist” but instead sketched the backs of heads in fine detail, with Mickey Mouse ears.

She said: “I was introduced to somebody who had a look at my work and said he’d shown it to his friend and they were doing a show in a year’s time. I didn’t know it was Banksy until about a week before the actual event. Everything was a big secret. It was an amazing thing to be a part of. Banksy was apparently walking around the whole time but I don’t know what he looks like. The weather was a bit tough — it was very windy and rainy. I had to pack everything up and run inside a few times.”

Wakefield will head to Los Angeles next where she will spend three months making a sculpture based on a blow-up sex doll as part of her second solo show. Her reverse portraits will appear in a group show Hung, Drawn and Quartered at The Exhibitionist Hotel in South Kensington, from Thursday to July 17.

The hotel and gallery holds exhibitions curated by Vestalia Chilton of attollo-art.com. Guest curator this month is Art of Treason.
